What is a Chromebook?
In addition to Microsoft's Windows and Apple's macOS, Google has also created its own operating system for laptops: Chrome OS. So-called Google laptops with this system are usually relatively cheaper than other laptop suppliers. But are they also a good choice for your purpose?
Surfing online is the centerpiece
A laptop running the Chrome operating system is specifically designed for browsing the internet: in fact, it can only launch the Google Chrome internet browser. You can't just download and install programs from the internet, like a Windows or macOS computer. This makes it nearly impossible to infect your computer or laptop, but it also reduces the system's versatility somewhat by limiting you to Google programs.
The advantage of ChromeOS basic settings is that the system can be fully configured for a task. This makes it very fast even on a cheap computer. In addition, the update is installed in the background, so you basically never wait in the background.
Easy to use
Since Chromebook has very limited functions, it is very easy to use. Do you only use your computer to occasionally check emails, search for content, and type documents? In principle, a Chromebook is sufficient for your purpose. If there are fewer functions, errors are less likely to occur and you cannot continue.
If you're unfamiliar with Windows or macOS, switching over isn't difficult. It's very similar to Windows in terms of processing: the taskbar is at the bottom, the menu key is on the left, a selection of applications is displayed in the middle, the clock is on the right, and some settings are on the right. The program is also similar to its Windows counterpart, with buttons for closing, resizing, or minimizing the program in the upper-right corner.
Installing apps
The fact that Chrome OS mainly revolves around the Chrome browser does not mean that no other applications can be installed at all. The Chrome Web Store contains applications that can run on any Chromebook, such as the VLC video player. Unfortunately, the webshop is closed in June.
Alternatively, more and more Chromebooks can also install Android applications. In this way, almost all operations that are already performed on an Android phone or tablet can be performed, but the practical advantage is that you can also use the keyboard and mouse.
If you have an older Chromebook that can't install Android apps, remember that there are many features available on the web: you can access Netflix, Spotify, your E., most chat programs and even Microsoft Office online. In addition, files can sometimes even be saved offline so that you can continue to watch, listen or use WiFi for work.
Chromebook benefits
- light, both in weight and software.
- Purchase price is usually low.
- Starts up in seconds.
- Automatic backup to Cloud.
- Battery life of between 7 and 9 hours.
Cons Chromebook
- Most apps and applications work through the web interface.
- Not suitable for heavier software.
